Breeding system.
The first thing you should know is that the original breeding system has been implemented on the server side, so we had no access to it and we don't know exactly which theories it was based on.
Therefore we are going to create the breeding system ourselves. Today there is no complete genetics theory that can explain all the variations of the equine coat colors, however many important genes have already been identified. For example, you may check out the basics at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equine_coat_color_genetics - it proposes the dependency between 21 coat colors and 7 genes. There are also other theories, which take into account larger number of genes and dependencies between them. We should also consider genes, that affect mane, tail and physical characteristics of the horse.
We would like to create a realistic breeding system based on modern research in horse genetics.
Each individual horse will have its genotype defined. Maybe we will even implement a new game option like "perform DNA analysis for your horse", so that you may have access to this information. The breeding will be performed according to genetics laws (meaning, for example, that the probability of a specific foal coat color will be calculated realistically).
There are some limitations, that should be considered:
1) The number of available horse colors, manes and tails in the game is limited (but we may consider adding some more colors if it is necessary to represent the variability of genetics).
2) The number of ancestor horses in the game is limited. Basically a new player gets just one horse, so those basic ancestor horses should represent the whole gene pool.
3) There might be a correlation between different genes (genes, related to horse coat, mane, tail, physical characteristics etc.)
4) Currently there are 22 coat colors, 8 mane and 6 tail types available (see the picture)
This is a very interesting and challenging task for all of us. If you have extensive knowledge in biology and genetics (especially horse genetics), please contact the page admins - your help might be very important. This topic will be discussed in details at our forum (when it opens), but for now we would like to talk about it in general. If you have some interesting idea for the breeding system - feel free to share it~
